I am new to Labview. I can't communicate with 3458A. It works with 34401a. I am using a Agilent 82357B USB/GPIB interface. I have a VEE program that works with the 3458A. I think I have a driver and/or configuration problem. I am at a total loss any help would be appreciated.

You don't have any problem. The instrument is detected. Since this old instrument does not support the *IDN? query, what you see is expected. Use the instrument driver you downloaded. Simply by looking at the block diagram of the Initialize function, you can see it uses the command ID? instead.

Thanks for the reply. Since I posted I was trying some more VI's with some sucess. I still can't get a query to work. Any thoughts?

That pdf does not contain any clues as to which VIs you tried. You obviously cannot use the low level GPIB functions with an Agilent GPIB controller. You would also need to do some special configuration to use LabVIEW and the NI-VISA functions. The most basic is to enable tulip support.

Looking at the pdf again, it shows that you are sending an incorrect command. I DID NOT say that the instrument uses *ID?.

Thanks again for your help. When I tried to enable tulip I found it was already enabled. The NI page I looked at for direction said it might also need a change in the Agilent I/O configuration, I could not find anything that looked like it would help.

I got it to work with the correct command. Thanks for all your help. I have a lot better understanding of how this works now.
