Communicate with GPIB through Microcontroller

Hello,

I have a piece of equipment in the lab that I want to retrofit with GPIB capabilities. I need to do this on a budget and have found many articles describing GPIB. But, I cannot find one that describes how commands are sent, i.e. Address is placed on IO lines - ATN is driven - Number of bytes to send is put on IO - ATN driven - First byte on IO - ATN is driven - etc.

If someone could point me to that article or information it would be a great help.

Are you planning on using one of the NI parts? Full documentation should be in IEEE-488.2

There was a similar question (actually it was the same exact question) asked just recently. I had suggested looking at something one of the products from ICS Electronics, such as their GPIB interfaces. I've used their 4863 to make an RF Switch Box we designed in-house GPIB-programmable.

I want to connect an Atmel microcontroller to the GPIB bus, whether through an NI chip or not. What NI chip do I use and how much does it cost?

Pricing is available on the link I provided. I think the TNT4882 would the be best for you though for single use, smercurio_fc's idea could be easier and cheaper. You should contact your local NI Sales Engineer or NI directly. My recent experience has been limited to knowing some of the engineers at a company next door that was using the NI ASIC in their commercial instrument designs.
