Can the 16550 UART set the RTS line?

Currently we control the RTS line of a RS485 serial port with software. This is not producing a fast
enough result.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have the UART set the RTS line on the status of the FIFO?

No, the basic 16550 UART does not support chip-level flow control. However there are many 16550-based, advanced UARTs that do.
