The thread that is still marked as unread doesn't have to be the one that you moved or merged.  It seems once I move or merge a thread, that and anything I read after remains marked as unread for a period of time, then the website seems to catch up to itself and shows them correctly.   Perhaps 10 minutes, maybe 20 minutes or more.
