Making NI 9144 chassis expansion PC based

Hello,

I'm fairly new to NI products and have a question about the 9144 expansion chassis.

The application I need doesn't require to have a dedicated controller.  I would therefore like to control I/O from my PC, and bypass the controller all together.  This is possible on the compact field point 1808 and 1804 but the I/O modules available for the RIO seem to be a better option.

Is it necessary for the 9144 expansion chassis to be connected to a controller or will I be able to control using my PC?

The NI 9144 is a slave device and requires a compliant EtherCAT Master controller and network to function.
