Source Code Control

Do you need LabVIEW Professional version to use third party SCC tools?

I was interested in TortoiseSVN.

Absolutely not. You can use source control tools such as Subversion/TortoiseSVN without the Pro's "source control" hooks. The only thing you lose is the diff'ing functionality. There is a add-on called lvdiff that allows you to call the Pro's VI comparison tools from within TortoiseSVN.

SCC is a critical tool for anyone doing this kind of work. Interestingly, I have found that it is valuable not only for backing up and archinving my work, but in a strange way it also helps foster my creativity because I know that if I end up at a dead end I can retrace my steps easily. Hence, I am much more likely to experiment and try different appraoches.
