How can I open a vi and show the block diagram?

Well, once again I get caught for skimming.  I did find the open / close VI in examples as specified above, and it performs the job as needed.  I tried to open the block diagram of the VI to see how it was opening and closing the VI, but is is password protected ;(

 

 

either way... there is a viable reason for the need.

Well, you're following up on a thread that's over four years old, but there is a way. Unfortunately, it uses a private property, which is not documented. See here for an example.

If you're using 8.6, you can now access everything needed for this without going through back doors. Have a look at the LabVIEW APIs group here, but be sure to read the various warnings and details.
