TS10403: Teaching Communications Engineering Using NI ELVIS and LabVIEW

Speaker: Nizar Tayem (Chair of Electrical Engineering department, Prince Mohamed bin fahd University)

Students need hands-on experience with modeling and implementing analog and digital communications systems to learn theoretical concepts and practical applications and to progress from simulation environments to physical hardware. Learn how you can help them gain this experience by combining the NI Educational Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Suite (NI ELVIS) with Emona DATEx and FOTEx telecommunications add-on boards. Examine a method to experimentally design and implement a transmitter and receiver that use QAM and FDMA techniques to send two voice signals through fiber-optic communications media and conventional electronics copper wire communications media and then compare the voices. Discover how to use Emona DATEx telecommunications, Emona FOTEx, NI ELVIS II, and LabVIEW software to perform the experimental implementation and analyze signals in the frequency and time domains.
