Smart Machine Control for Manufacturing Silicon Photonics Devices

Abstract: PI, in collaboration with ImagingLab, has developed a bench for the assembly and alignment of photonics devices for STMicroelectronics. CNIT-TeCIP (Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna – University of Pisa) coordinated the project, and is responsible for running the preproduction batch of fully packaged photonics devices. The bench integrates submicron 6 degrees-of-freedom and multiaxis mechanical systems; machine vision in the visible and shortwave infrared; robotized pick-and-place capability; a PXI controller; plug-in-based application-specific software; and a human machine interface under LabVIEW.
