What does it mean that a PXI Embedded Controller is NOT certified "24/7 Operation" ?

Solved!

Only a few PXI Embedded Real-Time Controllers are certified "24/7 Operation" : NI PXI-8110/08/06 RT

As I plan to build a PXI system with an embedded real-time controller for continuous security monitoring, I'd like to know if it means that the other ones (NI PXI-8106/04/02/01/83/45 RT) are not intended for permanent functioning.

Thanx.

Hi Herlag,

Our PXI systems are highly reliable under demanding operating conditions. For this reason, NI offers extended-temperature and 24/7 operation versions of its PXI embedded controllers. These embedded controllers use a more rugged hard drive designed for reliability in low- and high-temperature extremes and 100% duty cycle, 24/7 operation.

E.g NI PXI-8108 embedded controllers are available in two versions to address different enviromental and usage conditions. The primary difference is that the version for extended temperature and 24/7 operation uses a different hard drive. The hard drive in the extended temperature and 24/7 operation version has a capacity of 40 GB (minimum) versus the 60 GB (minimum) hard drive used in the standard version of the controllers.

designed for both reliability in low and high temperature extremes and 24/7 operation. The standard version of the controllers has an operating temperature of 5 to 50 °C and a storage temperature of -40 to 65 °C. The extended temperature and 24/7 operation version has an operating temperature of 0 to 55 °C and a storage temperature of -40 to 71 °C

The hard drives used in standard versions of these embedded controllers work in an operating range of 5 to 50 oC and a storage temperature of -40 to 65 °C and can operate at 20% duty cycle for eight hours/day, five days/week, similar to PCs and laptops.

The extended-temperature and 24/7 operation versions have an operating temperature of 0 to 55 oC and a storage temperature of -40 to 71 °C and can be used for applications that require continuous operation, up to 100% duty cycle, for 24 hours/day, seven days/week

Hopefully this helps.

Regards,

Steve M.
