PXIe-8301 in PXIe-1078 thunderbolt problem

Hi DrOnline82,

It sounds like you may be hitting a problem I've seen before. The root of the problem is a bug in support for newer Thunderbolt hosts where some assumptions aren't necessarily true for PXI/PCI devices (vs PXIe/PCIe). NI put a workaround for some Thunderbolt hosts in PXI Platform Services, but it's a hardware-specific workaround and hasn't been updated to include the ThunderboltEX 4's Thunderbolt chip.

The underlying bug should be fixed in Windows 11 but it might require the latest update. So, if you're feeling adventurous, you could try this with Windows 11 22H2. Meanwhile I'll try to get the ThunderboltEX 4 included in PXI-PS but that will likely take some time.

Hmm, that's an interesting suggestion. I will definitely try upgrading to the latest windows 11 tomorrow. Before I unbox that new motherboard. Thanks a lot. We'll see what happens.

I just installed Windows 11 22H2, and it works great now. I detect all the PXI boards, and they are all running just fine. I didn't change anything else, and we tried three fresh windows 10 installs and they always produced the errors I described in my first post, so this clearly is what did the trick. Thanks a lot for your help. I'm using the original motherboard with the ThunderboltEX 4 expansion card. I'll just return that new motherboard I ordered. I hope anybody else encountering the same problem in the future can find help in the thread.

I know that this thread is a little old but I ran across this while trying to find a problem that I am having with all of the thunderbolt equipment that we are using. I made a "setup guide" for me and my colleagues to help us remember all of the steps that we usually have to go through with a new system setup which includes Asus motherboards and the NI Pxie-8301. I think we only have one system that is using the Thunderbolt EX4 Pcie adapter. The guide also covers the use of the Asus ROG Maximus XIII Hero motherboard with an onboard thunderbolt controller. This guide is not full proof! As I am currently having issues with a system that is identical to many others. The 8301 will simply not show up in NI Max as anything other than a USB device.
