PXIe-1083 chassis not been recognized on NI MAX

Hi. I am trying to run a Labview executable on a deployment machine which is connected to a PXIe-1083 chassis via a thunderbolt cable. I believe I have installed necessary runtime engines and NI MAX on the machine. The link LED on the PXIe-1083 chassis is "green", and the chassis is recognized on Thunderbolt Control Center (see "Capture.png"), but somehow the chassis does not show up on NI MAX. If I checked it on Device Manager, one of PCI Express Upstream Switch Port has Code31 error.(see "Capture1.png")  The deployment machine has a thunderbolt card (Gigabyte Titan Ridge 2.0) installed, which I am using to try to establish the communication between the machine and the chassis. -Does it mean I need to re-install the driver for the thunderbolt card?

My development machine was using PXIe-1073 instead and did not have any communication problem at all. (It's a shame NI discontinued PXIe-1073.)

Thunderbolt connection is quite new and troublesome to me. Any help or advice would be highly appreciated.

Hello. While I can't provide a direct answer to your inquiry, I'm facing a similar issue myself. I'm attempting to establish communication over Thunderbolt 3 using a desktop PC with a Thunderbolt 4 expansion card (ASUS Thunderbolt ex4). At the moment, the LED light on the chassis is not green but rather amber. In the Thunderbolt Control Center, I can see two ports displayed, but the PXIe-1083 chassis is not visible there. As this is my first time working with Thunderbolt 3 communication, I'm unsure about the root cause of the current problem. If you wouldn't mind, could you share the steps involved in getting the chassis to appear in the Thunderbolt Control Center? Your guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello dsfkgw-san,

(Hajimemasite. Watashi mo Nihon-jin desu.)

I am quite a beginner as to Thunderbolt interface as well, so not sure if I could be much of help to you. But at least I could manage to sort out my problems and now my system is working perfectly fine. So based on the limited experience I have, I think here is a list of what you might want to go through to begin with.

  • Does your motherboard (chip set) really support your thunderbolt add-in card (ASUS Thunderbolt EX4)? -If you have not gone through the list of ThenderboltEX4 compatible model list available from ASUS site, it is worth having this checked.
  • Is your thunderbolt add-in card supported with the Windows version you installed? -my add-in card (Gigabyte Maple Ridge) required Windows10/11 update to the latest version to get the card working.
  • Is your BIOS version latest? if not, it is worth updating the BIOS to the latest one.
  • Is your add-in card's driver latest one and installed properly? Some cards require the driver installed before physically installing the card to motherboard. Is the card installed into a correct version of PCIe slot? - PCIe 3.0?
  • Is the cable you are using to connect your PC with PXIe-1083 truly Thunderbolt cable, not Type-C cable?

I guess the Thunderbolt Control Centre does not recognize PXIe-1083 at all means communication either between your motherboard and your add-in card or between your add-in card and PXIe-1083 has problem(s). I suggest you to check error message(s) on Device Manager, to see what error message(s) you've got, and how the error message(s) change as you connect/disconnect the Thunderbolt cable to/from PXIe-1083 chassis.

I think if you see some error message even when the Thunderbolt cable is disconnected from the chassis, the issue might be caused by motherboard not communicating with your add-in card. If the error message appear only when the cable is connected to the chassis, it might be the cable or chassis that is causing the issue.

Also have you read this link (https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA03q000000wwa8CAA&l=en-GB) to ensure BIOS setting is not blocking the communication? I hope it helps...

Hello dsfkgw-san,

Also, have you tried manually powering up the chassis first before booting up your PC?

This might solve your problem as well.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I am facing the same issue now.

Hi hillmj,

It often has poor contact problems, but I found that reconnecting the connector resolved the errors. I hope this helps!

The thunderbolt cable has poor connection problems, or is it the ASUS thudnerbolt ex card to the motherboard that has connection problems? Thanks so much!

The issue was with the Thunderbolt cable connection.

Specifically, after unplugging and plugging the cable back in, the connection worked.

Thank you!
