Other Devices in addition to NI-MXI Devices in Device Manager

Solved!
Go to solution
On installing hardware and drivers in a system with a PC and a 1044 rack (connected with MXI-4), XP Pro Device Manager is showing (in addition to NI-MXI Devices) an "Other Devices" category with a sub-device of "PCI Device" with the same PCI slot as the MXI card.  This "PCI Device" is errored with the indication "The drivers for this device not installed (Code 28)".  If MXI card is moved to a different slot, device manager always tries to resolve and fail this unknown PCI device before installing the real MXI driver and the drivers for the cards in the rack.

The other device that you are seeing is most likely the PCI to PCI bridge.  The PCI-1044 has three PCI bus segments, thus it has two of these bridges.  Some motherboards have trouble handling all these PCI slots.  The first thing I would recommend is updating the BIOS to the latest version.  This KB has more information.

If upgrading your BIOS doesn't help, I would try installing PXI Platform Services 2.4.2 to make sure you have the latest driver.

Finally, post two things:

1. The make and model of your PC; as much information about it as possible.

2. The model and part number of your MXI-4 card.

Thanks for the response.

I found the problem.  I had not yet installed the driver for a third party cCPI device (GE/Condor ARINC) which was also present in the NI rack.  Once the driver was installed and the hardware wizard properly recycled, the Other Device was replaced with the GE/Condor Device.

Thanks for the update ballkeeper.  That makes sense that you would have an unknown device if there wasn't a driver installed for it.
