Converting Numeric Format To Exponential

Hi, I'd like to convert a 6 digit number into a exponential but not include the 0's in the formatted number (as 8e+005).

I'd like to get rid of the extra 0's so that the formatted number becomes:

8e+5

Is there a way to do this?  Thanks.
