Use Sound Measurement for Quality Check

I have a requirement where in I want to measure / analyse sound. Actually my client uses a hammer like thing to knock against the brake pad (this is a composite material containing metal, fibre etc). The sound generated is used to determine sub surface defects. The hollows or cracks at the sub surface level generate a different sound. We suggested ultrasonic or thermal imaging but the cost is a major setback. They are already doing the sound test manually. Therefore, I was wondering if it possible to do the following using NI sound took kit:
1. Use a sound card or NI DAQ card for sound acquisition
2. Make a test rig to strike the Brake pad controlled by Labview
3. Capture the sound and analyse variations.

Can some one suggest if this is possible and if so the details. I already have Ni Developer Suite with Labview PDS.

Thanks in advance

Hello NoviceS,

I see you are trying to develop an application that uses sound analysis to determine sub surface defects in brake pads.
In terms of hardware, you can use a microphone and one of our DSA (dynamic signal aquisition) solutions, like the 4461 which has 24-bit resolution ADCs and DACs with 118 dB dynamic range and configuratable IEPE.

Product Page: NI PXI-4461

For software, look at using the Sound and Vibration Tool Kit or Measurement Suite. They offer all the tools to do the analysis that you'd require for an application like this.

LabVIEW Sound and Vibration Toolkit Software Overview and Feature Comparison

Some things to consider:

1. What platform or form factor do you plan to use to implement your application? PXI, cDAQ? PCI? USB?
2. How many channels do you want?
3. Do you want input and output?
4. What type of analysis do you plan to do?
5. Do you want to automate this test sequence? If yes, consider using TestStand.

In addition to these resources, you can also contact NI by phone to talk to an applications engineer about your application.
