Temperature Measurement System 101

I am trying to build a temperature measurement system for a project but I am not sure I fully understand what components are needed. The hardware that I have provided for me is a PCI 6033e DAQ board in a Magma box (PN CB232)with software LabVIEW 7.0 (full development). My first question is: 1) Does the PCI 6033e have a built in CJC sensor or do I have to buy another device? 2) If I have to buy a some kind of CJC sensor does NI sell the device alone or do I have to get another PCI board with it built in? 3) If I have to get a CJC sensor does it have to be a NI device or can it be another brand due to compatability issues?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

To answer your questions, the PCI-6033E does not have a built in CJC sesnsor, you will have to purchase an external component.

NI does sell multiple stand-alone devices that you can purchase and easily integrate with your 6033E. If all you need is the CJC sensor, I would recommend the SCB-100 which has a IC temperature sensor for cold-junction compensation in temperature measurements.

If you did buy a 3rd party product that included a CJC sensor, you will have to be able to route that CJC sensor to one of the analog input channels, read the temperature measurements in as a voltage, and then set up calculations in your LabVIEW application to include the CJC in your measurements.

If you use the NI device, you will be able to select the SCB-100 in so
ftware, which would then allow you to select the Built-In CJC sensor that the software knows is there, and the voltage-to-temperature calculations are done for you, as is the cold junction compensation.

Hope this helps. Good luck with you application.
