Setting analog input gain with VB.NET

I thought this would be easy, but I'm obviously missing something. I'm using Visual Studio 2010 (VB.NET) to write an acquisition program. I can acquire analog input voltage with no problem. What I can't seem to do is set the gain on the channel. I am trying to use a simulated PCI-6220 card and use all 65K counts for a 0 to 10 V range. I only get 32K for the 0 to 10 V signal and if I try to set the gain (as I have attempted to do) I get an error when it runs: "Specified property is not supported by the device or is not applicable to the task". I also get the same error when I use real hardware. According to the documentation, the 6220 has a software programmable gain but I can't seem to find any examples of how to do that. Can somebody point me in the right direction?
