NI 9191 and 9215 Ad Hoc Setup Problems

We are trying to setup a NI 9191 with the 9215 module over an ad hoc network to run it on the iPad app. When we setup the hardware and have it all connected, MAX shows that the 9191 is broadcasting the SSID and we are able to find and connect to the broadcasting signal using WiFi connections. The problem is that NI iPad app cannot find the 9215 module automatically or when the host name is typed in. What can we do to solve this problem?

 

Versions

MAX- 15.0

9191/9215- 1.5.0

Computer- Windows 7

iPad- 7.1.2

NI cDAQ-9191 app- 1.0

Hey UWdaq,

 

Can you communicate with the 9215 via MAX? If this is not working I would ensure that you have reserved the NI 9191 chassis in MAX. It should autodetect the module at that point.

If it can connect through MAX and not on the iPad you might try forgetting the device on the iPad and reconnecting.

Hi Kevin,

 

Everything is recognizable in MAX and works in MAX. I deleted the cDAQ app, restarted the iPad, downloaded the app again and I am still unable to connect the 9215 to the app using an ad hoc connection. The ad hoc SSID is visible in my network settings and I am able to see the IP address and subnet mask.

Have you tried updating the NI 9191's driver to the upgrade for mobile device support: https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-21478

I currently have the version starting with 1.5 running on the NI9191 and still not seen by the app.

Hi UWdaq,

 

Are you able to see the device as below within the app and you just can't connnect to it? Or are you trying to connect via Wi-Fi in the Settings of iOS itself?

Hi Kevin,

 

I have the 9191 set up so it is broadcasting the ad hoc network. My iPad WiFi then switches over to the 9191 SSID while I open the cDAQ 9191 app. Once, open this is the screen that I see. When I refresh the screen nothing changes and when I type in the host name I get a message that says "Device Error."image.jpg

I appolgize we haven't made much headway with this. This forum discusses some common issues with the 9191 and ad-hoc networks: https://decibel.ni.com/content/message/36145#36145 however I don't see many more next steps past what we have tried. There is a post mentioning that it can often take several minutes for the ad-hoc network to be recognized by a mobile platform. I am going to discuss this issue with some colleagues and see if we can come up with some next steps.

Hi Kevin,

 

Is there any update? I meet a similar problem and try to use IOS app 'NI 9191 cDAQ Data Display'  to connect an ad-hoc nectwork createdy by NI 9191. But it fails due to not able to connect to the network. If I connect both the IOS app and NI 9191 to a common wireless network, it works well.

Hi Sheng,

 

The most information I was able to find is that the iOS app and cDAQ-9191 are known to have issues using ad-hoc networks. We don't have access to many resources on the iOS app itself. If standard troubleshooting steps don't work, unfortunately, the best workaround I was able to find is reverting to using a common network.
