yes there is idea why it could not open your avi file
your problem relate about supported codec
fast solution is to convert your file into avi with medium quality and size
install this software http://www.pcfreetime.com/
use convert to avi
and select medium quality and size in output option it is fastest way to get result

I can't afford to lose the quality. Any other way? I don't know what the codec is for my video files. Also I can get it to work using the old version of avi function but then i have the problem of not been able to access these from the palette. Is there a work around for this?

try what i told using medium quality it is not means that you will be loose your data that you need it depend on what you need try it maybe it is what you want
also you can add old vi into your pallete
for this one go to tool advance and edit pallete and all your vis to pallete

Changing the palettes didnt work they are all just the same as before. Also I cannot install software to convert right now because I am using a university PC which won't let me install anything. Is there anyhing else I could try?

Thanks

I think I'll have to find another work around. I could send you the file to convert but this wouldn't be practical as I have around 50 different video files. Thanks you for your help though
