What is the limit for 8-bit images (#pixels) for Vision assitant to handle them?

I am trying to work with an 8-bit image of about 180000000 pixels. Vision assistant gives an error: " not enough memory". Eventhough my PC uses only ca 990 Mb of the 3 Gb memory installed (2x 512 Mb (first series) and 2x 1 Gb(second series)). Making a smaller image is not an option as I need the number of objects in the image and the resolution (very small seeds). How to overcome this problem and what is the limit (image size in # of pixels) for Vision assitant to handle? Or is Labview (a VI more powerfullin these terms than a script of Vision assisstant.  And yes I use buffers to store images during the processing.

I have been told that it could have something to do with the largest available memory block in my RAM. Does it make and difference which modules (512 Mb or 1 Gb) are in the first position of my memory boards ?

Thanks

Hi Peter,

I would definitly go to a smaller image. You could split it with an overlaping zone and add the quantity you you find in each different picture.

There will be many problems if you stick with the large picture :

. the processing time will not increase linearly with the size of the picture, etc etc.

I don't see your point why you want  to stay with a large picture.

Peter -

See the Maximum File Size question for a discussion of memory size.  In short, to read a 990 MB file, you need a contiguous block of 990 MB.  This may be impossible even if you have more free memory than that due to memory fragmentation.  I don't think which memory modules you have in which slots will make a difference, though.

Thank you both for your reply but I am surprised that labview/Vision assitant makes problems (doesn't want to read the large image due to too big), while other proffesional programmes like Photoshop CS  and others don't complain at all.... Perhaps something for a next update?
