Smart camera for flame and smoke detection

Has anyone ever done this with the camera?  Is the camera capable of hold the agorithems to do the task?

What you're proposing would be difficult to accomplish with a smart camera, especially with regard to the smoke. Normally, you'd use an infrared camera for this type of application because flames can take on so many different shapes and colors and smoke is difficult to distinguish from air. It'd be much easier to have information about heat, which you can obtain through the IR spectrum. However, you may have some success by using different lens filters and possibly different lighting techniques to attempt to illuminate smoke in the air.

 

Do have a specific flame and smoke detection scenario in mind? Could you provide details on the size, intensity, and source of the flame/smoke?

Hello,

 

yes IR should be the best way to go in your case. I would say maybe the only reliable way to go. Usually, the smoke and flame measurements are performed in the spectral band around 4um (~3.9 um - 4.5um). Typically 3.9 um for flame and 4.24/4.64 um for smoke.

IR would be the best way to go, but I am looking for a all around camera, secuirty, flame, smoke, etc...for outdoor enviroment that can analyze and send information when there is something it thinks it is abnormal.  The company below makes the software for flame and smoke for IP cameras, but we are limited on the number of cameras we can add.  The issues I am also having is our locations are scattered and I don't want to take up bandwith through our wireless network and didn't want to add a seperate computers with the program at each location.  It doesn't need to be 100% accurate or control anything at this point, just that if there is something that seems like it could be fire or smoke, warn us to look and we will go from there.  From looking at the smark camera, it seems like I could program the algorithum to maybe substract the background and maybe monitor the RED intensities?  If flame is high RED intensity, let me know.

That sounds reasonable to try. But, I'm not sure if it'd be able to give you satisfactory performance and reliability. You do have the option of downloading the trial versions of our Vision Development Module (VDM) or Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (VBAI) products. You could then use any camera to acquire some images of smoke and fire and use our software to check if your algorithm ideas work. VDM is a LabVIEW add-on, which gives you low-level control over our image processing algorithms. Whereas, VBAI is a stand alone application that lacks some of the functionality of VDM, but it's menu-configured and allows you to create vision inspections much faster. Either of these software products can run on our smart cameras. I linked some info pages and trial download sites below.
