Given the sample images, I can say with great certainty that you won't beable to accomplish this task with a visible light camera.
Ellipse detection is the least of your problems here. There is so much vaiability in the images, and the background, that a single detection strategy will never yeild good results. A multi-spectral camera, or FLIR may give better images, possibly coupled with an illumination, or heat excitation source.
