What are the major differences in running Debug mode vs. "Release" mode in a CVI project?

We have a production system that ran for a while in "Debug" mode.  Our configuration is critical to us and I'd like to know how adversely (or not) timing loops and/or delays might have been affected.  In general and CVI release versions not withstanding, are the differences in execution a) substantial b) minor or c) inconsequential.

(We didn't see any major fallout, but a few tidbits did seem to creep into the performance matrix).
