CVI 7, how do i handle msm merge files?

The answer to the "CVI 7 bold font" problem on european and asian versions of the win 9.x platforms was to add a downloaded file cvirte.msm to the folder [CVI70DIR]\Redist\msms.

1. Is the result a patched cvirte.dll in a installation created by the microsoft installer?

This leads to additional questions:
2. How do i patch my locally installed cvirte.dll?
3. Do i miss any patches if i distribute the locally installed Dlls (e.g. by using InstallShield 5.5) without the merging of the files located in [CVI70DIR]\Redist\msms ?

Hello Kai,

To try and answer your questions:

1) The CVI Distribution kit creates an MSI that will contain the patched cvirte.dll.
2)To pathc your local copy you can just copy the cvirte.dll from a machine with the distribution on it to the system folder over the existing one. It has been version upgraded so that it will update properly.
3) You will miss the patched cvirte.dll if you use the installed dll files (this is the only file updated so far). We do suggest that you use MSMs even when using other installer technologies. I thought that installshield had added support for MSMs a while back.

There is a nice help writeup located at:
[CVIDIR]\bin\cdk_mod.pdf

This talks about using other installer technologies.

I hope this helps out.

Hallo Jeff,

thank you for your help.

I am using InstallShield 5.5 from 1999 which does not support msms.

I tried to find an answer by myself yesterday and came to a similar solution. I opened a sample project, created a msi and installed it on my own system.
The problem was: It did not overwrite my cvirte.dll.
A second try after deleting my cvirte.dll succeded.

The file has been updated from version 7.0.0.393 to 7.0.0.394.

My InstallShield distribution kit, installed on a german Windows98, did work fine with bold fonts, which had been a problem with the former cvirte.dll.

It is comforting to know, that no other patches or updates are necessary yet.

Thank You!

Hello Kai,
sorry but your (and previous) explanation is quite difficult to understand for me. I am at the point that I downloaded cvirte.msm. What to do to install it properly and to prevent my distribution kits show the "bold font problem" on the installation computers ?
Thanks in advance,
Marco
