Well, there are two shipping examples - State Machine Test Sequencer and Test Sequencer. They are both pretty basic but you can start with either and can build from there. I don't know of anything more complete but maybe someone else will be able to post something. Having done it in the past, let me give a word of warning. Test executives can get pretty complex. Writing your own is certainly possible but at some point, you have to decide whether the time and effort is worth it or do you buy something that will do everything you want. I realized several years ago that what I needed was something with all of the power of TestStand. I was looking at several man-months of development to get just the basic functions that everyone wanted so the decision to by TestStand was easy. I could then concentrate on the development of the actual tests. Good luck.

I totally agree with Dennis. I have seen 3rd party test executives, years in the making, and not be nearly as good as TestStand. I have tried writing my own simple executive and found out that it would take a lot of time to create all the functionality I needed (such as disabling steps temporarily, jumping to another step upon current step pass/fail, pre and post step actions, passing variables, etc). Where I work now, there is a homemade test executive, it took years to develop to the point where it is now, and it is still far short of TestStand. How much is your time worth? I think TestStand is a wise investment.
