serial port problem

Hi. This is more like a hardware question. but since I'm using labVIEW doing
the communication, I'd like to ask here. 🙂

I need to control a shutter via serial port. But the stupid shutter
controller is female plugin while my cable is female to male. So I bought a
25 pin extension cable and a Null modem connecter. My question is if this is
a good combination? Will there be any problem like wrong pin order or
similar? Now I found the shutter won't listen to my command at all.

It depends on the type of cable you have and the type of instrument your shutter is. The PC is a DTE port, and if the instrument is also DTE then you will need the null-modem adapter and a straight-through cable, or just a null-modem cable. If the device is a DCE device, then all you need is a straight through cable.

If the current configuration does not work, then the chances are you don't need the null-modem adapter. Instead use a gender-bender that doesn't swap TX and RX.

You don't need a null modem, you need a "gender changer".

In addition to the above posts, check the manuals for the equipment you are trying to communicate with to ensure that you are using the right type of cable. Also for the right port configuration, commands, and transmission control characters.
