pause vi from another vi

I want to pause a vi that is a 'layer' below the vi I want to pause it from. I have tried using global variables but this does not seem to work. Can anyone help please? I just want a simple way, maybe using the simple pause and continue while loop structure that many people have used on the forum to pause the loop.
