need to use a continuos timer and set timer

i am new to labview, i am currently doin a project for my degree. its a digital fitness test. Basically i am using labview to collect and compare times of a runner. I am wondering how i go about using a continuos timer and a timer with a fixed time(e.g take 9s to go from point a to point b, if he doesnt make it then fail will come up and if he does then a pass will come up, this is my general idea which i have already completed for in PIC), then compare both times and output these times to a spreadsheet os something like it. Any pointers and similar examples would be of a major help.
thanks in advance for any help!!!!!!

A very good way of timing your application is by using a functional global variable. In the VI I attached, your functional global is the Measure time.vi

You reset the timer when the application starts, then the code you want to time runs and after that you measure the elapsed time. You also write the result to

a file and display the result on an indicator of the front panel.

Let us know if that helped,

yes that is a huge help, thanks a million, i have just 1 more question. My input will be from a rfid reader via a rs232 link so how would i go about creating a input that will vary so when i measure the times then i will not be getting the same result over and over, i tried creating a square wave input which is what i should see but my attempts have come up short, i just need to count from when the input doesnt detect any tag(tag left rf range of reader) untill the tag re enters the rf feild, your help would be very much appreciated!!!!!!

thanks in advance
