labview 8 splash screen

Because of this traversing into .svn directories I always export the project directory to user.lib and don't have the working repository directly there. It's more hassle, though...

Removing the svn folders did not seem to make as much difference to the load time as remonving the shortcuts did for some reason... No clue why that is, unless it was following the shortcuts.

I've been following this thread with some interest as I also see a really long load time for LV8. In fact, it's for this reason that I'm not recommending LV8 to be used here at work. It's just unacceptable. I been reading about the possible solutions like license managers (which I don't have) and other stuff, none of which works. I can say that emptying the user.lib folder also does nothing on my system as far as load time for LV8. The only things that were in my user.lib folder were a _probes folder and an _express folder which LV automatically created. Even after emptying this directory the load time for LV8 was still way too long. Something else is going on.

Thats interesting. I also had no luck wiht the other solutions. I just found that the user.lib folder worked for me. Perhaps some of the other vi folders (vi.lib, addons, etc) are full? Maybe this wont have any effecton our machine.

I agree it is un acceptable. I have lost probably a good 20-30 hour of billable hours so far on this issue. Unfortunately labview 8 is what my customer owns.

I only had .mnu files in there, so I deleted them.  It seems to have knocked off about 30 seconds from my load time.  (Seems weird!)  Thanks.

Then I browsed the OPTIONS, "Performance and Disk", and I unchecked the "Check Disk Space at Startup" and this greatly decreased the load time.  It used to spend 30 seconds in the "Finishing Initialization", now my total load time is 10 seconds.

So to the previous poster, try unchecking the disk space checking.  Maybe you installed it onto some old PC's with lots of stuff on the disk, and little free space.

Come to think of it, i may have deleted the menu files when i deleted the shortcuts. you may be on to something.

There actually was a .mnu file in the user.lib directory which got deleted when I emptied out that folder. As I said, it made no difference. Also unchecking the option you mentioned did not make a difference. Besides, I have about 50 GB of free disk space. Right now I have LV8 installed on only my computer at work. I also have LV7 and it starts up just fine.

NI is apparently aware of this problem with a lot of installations. Don't know what they've found out, if anything.

One would think that if labview was busy traversing the user.lib folders, it would be hammering the hard drive- but from experience i NEVER saw that. In fact the hard drive light was off and CPU was zero. I wonder if it was a corrupt .mnu file.

Again, the original symptoms for me was a 5 MINUTE load time or even a crash, not a "long" start time like 60-120 seconds...

just thinking out loud...
