on the connect to serial.vi there are multiple options to change I don't understand which options, and how do you know what to type into the string to correlate to the specific modem?

There is a brief tutorial on serial communication. You need to match the settings of the modem and those should be detailed in the manual for it.

The VISA Resource Name has an arrow on the right side that you can click on to view your system's available com ports. You can use windows device manager, 'Phone and Modem Options' in Control Manager, and MAX, to determine which port is associated with your modem.
