ftp and labview RT??

Labview RT PXI controllers support an ftp host so the host machine can
exchange files with the controller.

The nasty part is that there is no programmatic way to do this short of
purchasing a thousand dollar connectivity kit.

Of course, you can always use labview to shell out to the OS, but it would
seem that NI should provide a minimal ftp client vi as an inclusion in
Labview RT

Scott,

Not all people that purchase LabVIEW Real-Time are using it with RT Series PXI Controllers. Some use it with RT Series DAQ devices that have no FTP Server.

You can purchase the LabVIEW Internet Developers Toolkit p/n 777343-01 (which contains LabVIEW tools for FTP) separately for 1/3 the cost of the LabVIEW Enterprise Connectivity Toolset. With that toolkit, you can do programmatic FTP exchanges from LabVIEW.

You can also use the System Exec.vi (Functions>>Communication>>System Exec.vi) to use the FTP program that comes with Windows to programmatically transfer files, like you said. Have you had problems doing this?

No problems, except the speed. For some reason, it is much slower to move
files around this way then it does to use windows explorer ftp capabilities
(which we can't reach easily from system exec). I think the windoze-
packaged ftp client might be poor.

It just seems reasonable that enhanced support for any form of communication
with a PXI chassis is something that should be packaged with LabviewRT.
It's great that the FTP server is available on the PXI side, but
programmatic interface from the host side is desirable.

This isn't meant to be a criticism, by the way, but please put this on a
"wish list", if there is one. It's hard to believe that including this
functionality in RT would be difficult--it seems it would just be a matter
of crippling most of the internet developers toolbox.

There is a wishlist. Visit http://www.ni.com/labviewrt and click on LabVIEW Real-Time Wishlist. Then fill out the form and enter your comments. A direct link is:
