Open the configuration dialog box for "Open FPGA VI Reference" and you'll see the checkbox for "Bind to Type Definition." See the help. You may want to use a dynamic reference instead, if you're using a newer version of LabVIEW. I haven't used that option yet but a post elsewhere on this forum from an NI employee recommended that as an alternative to binding a type definition.
