display memory usage front panel

I was wondering if there was a way to display memory usage of a VI on the front panel?  I've been tryign to use Metrics property nodes, but I get an error saying "The VI is not in a state compatible with this operation" am I going about this the wrong way?

You cannot read the total data size when the VI is running, understandably. This is documented in the Help for the property itself:

Metrics:Total Data Size Property

All other properties execute fine.
