is it possible to create my own icons for the palette menu?

Tools -> Advanced -> Edit palette views...
Go in the user functions or commands and right click in them -> Insert.

is it possible to create your own icon for an application.  The labview vi has an icon of its own. Similarly can I do for my own VI

you can do this by opening up your vi and on the icon in the right hand corner you can right click on it and select edit icon and then you can do whatever you want.
