analog period measurement

I'm sort of confused as to how the Analog Period Measurement VI works. I have an input signal controlled by a potentiometer which goes into the analog period measurement. I want to be able to find the frequency of the input signal/potentiometer.

I have been following this reference manual:

http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371599G-01/lvfpga/fpga_period_measurement/

However my frequency is always 0. My period(samples) is always either the 2 values: 0 or 20. My loop rate is a constant 25. So my period(sec) becomes around 500. I don't think I'm sampling or reading the data wrong. I have tried changing the property values of the analog period measurement such as the threshold level and interpolate crossing without any results. I've been stuck on this problem and I cannot figure out why.
