amplitude/phase modulation on real-time audio signals

Hi,

 I am trying to create digital sound effects, like vibrato & tremulo on real-time audio input signals. These require modulation of the phase or amplitude of the signals. So how do I go about extracting the component of the signal that I wish to modulate?

Could you please be a little more decriptive about what parts of the signal you wish to extract? I am not very familiar with digital sound effects, so some help would be appreciated. Have you taken a look at any of our Signal Processing VIs?
