Will Labview require activation

Will Labview require activation at some later date as CVI now requires? Since I develop software for clients, I need to change the hardware on my computer several times a month. I have always supported NI but will need to rethink that if this Microsoft concept of activation becomes an NI reality.

I have never heard of this on NI products. Are you saying that if you
change your hardware on a machine running CVI, you have have to perform
some reactivation procedure? This is shocking. I went to the NI site and
found a link. http://www.ni.com/support/licensing/licensefaq.htm

Take a look at the "What is the Computer ID Based Upon?" link on that
page. I
t says "The computer ID is based on the MAC address of your
Ethernet adapter, or in some circumstances on the disk volume serial
number". So it would appear that swapping various DAQ boards will not be
a problem. I'm not a big fan of activation mechanisms but this one
doesn't seem unreasonable.

I use machines with 2 differnet NIC cards that are regularly changed, also we have disabled the MAC address on the card and assign it dynamically everytime the DHCP lease expires to keep things more secure, There are times when the machine will ask me to register 3 times a day, that is unacceptable.

Wow, that sucks. Make your life easier and switch to Linux. They don't
even have you enter a serial number during installation so I doubt they'll
ever try to initiate this hardware registration hook under Linux. I'm not
sure if it's even possible.

Probably not the answer you're looking for but I'm not aware of any other
options.

What version are you using? The first release of 7.0 did not have that, but the last update I received seemed to. I have not loaded it yet.

Sucks is a nice way of putting it, and you are right, this activation scheme is giving me a wonderful excuse to go to Linux, and I will probably create my own test executive since Test Stand requires the same type of activation.

Curious that NI would use a Microsoft type activation, makes you think that one day the Microsoft logo will appear above NI.

Wow, you're funny! You responded to a 5 month old post like it was
posted yesterday. I use a news reader so it's easy for posts I no longer
watch to slip by me.

NI still has to protect their investment no matter what OS is used so I'm
not sure if switching to Linux will keep you safe for long. LV is
proprietary code and activation is the best way for NI to prevent piracy.

Now that would be interesting... I would prefer Novell, IBM, or even Sun.
