Why can't I delete parts of controls in customize mode?

I tried to customize a slide control. In customize mode, I could not delete cosmetic parts. Also, when I use the custom control in a VI, I cannot modify the size of the control like I can using a regular slide. The background part of the custom control when selected with the pointer tool takes up too much of the front panel.

What "cosmetic parts" of a slide control did you try to delete? The scale? Right-click on the control and goto Scale >> Style, then select the empty square to get no scale. The pointer? Use a Fill Slide instead of a Pointer Slide.
I couldn't duplicate your problem of not being able to change the size of a custom control on a VI. I just place the custom control and use the mouse to change its size like any other control.
What is the "background part" of a slide control? When I select the custom control, is doesn't take up any more room than the visible items.
Can you post your custom control?
I looked at your problems in LabView 6 and 7. What version are you using?

Unfortunately, I cannot post the control because I cannot upload anything from my location. I will try to walk you through my problem.

First, drag a classic horizontal fill slide onto a front panel.

Right click on it and select Advanced/customize...

A custom control window appears.

Click on the wrench button to change it to a pair of tweezers. The mode changes from edit mode to customize mode.

Now, try to delete the 2 triangles at the left and right of the slide.

I you could figure out how to delete the triangles, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am using labVIEW 7.0.

The triangles aren't just decorative: they're the called the pixel increment/decrement arrows.
You can make the arrows transparent. Select the paintbrush tool. Point to one of the arrows, then right-click, then select the T box to the right of the grey-scale bar. Then paint the other arrow as well. They'll still be there, but they'll be transparent. You can also resize them to make them smaller and harder to operate.

As stated above, you can't delete them in this version of the control
editor. You can make them transparent, and you can also move them
underneath the housing. Select them either interactively or using the
Window>>Parts Window, and use the mouse buttons to move them under the
housing. If needed, you can also send them to back using the Ctl-J and
Ctl-K or the toolbar button.
