Where is the Event Structure?

I am sure this is a stupid question but....

I just upgraded from LabView 6.0 to 6.1. I opened a new vi all excited to try out the new event structure, but I can not find it. It is not in my functions>structures palette. Is there something I am missing?

Hi

Which LV package do you have? The event structure is only available in the FDS or PDS version of LV 6.1.

You are correct about where the event should be. The event icon has a little e in it. Check to see if you are really using LabVIEW 6.1 by opening LabVIEW and looking at the splash screen. You can also go to help >> about LabVIEW. If you really using LabVIEW 6.1, what you discribe means there is a problem with the palettes. I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling.

I am using 6.1. I had to unistall and reinstall several times because the license manager hosed the installation several times. Another post said that the event structure is not available in the base version. Is this true? If it is I am pretty upset. I upgraded only to get the event structure and no where in all the hype did it mention that it was only for certain versions. Why? Is this the new NI practice to only offer improvements to certain packages. I can understand limiting analysis vis, but this is a structure. It makes no sense!

Hi

Event driven programming is available only in the LV FDS and PDS. If you build a VI that contains an Event structure using LV FDS or PDS, you can run that VI in the LV base package, and LV retains the Event structure functionality. But you cannot edit the Event structurein the LV base package.
I'm sorry.

Hi

I found this comparison chart which shows what is included in the different LV packages:

Just reading the mail on this one, but the chart you reference shows that "programming structures and fundamentals" is included in the base package. In looking at the chart, I don't see anything that would indicate that the event structure is not included. Perhaps you could recheck and verify whether the event structure is part of the base package?

Thanks,

Jim

If you look under Advanced User Interface Tools, you'll see Event-driven user interface programming and it's marked as not being available in the base version.

Yes, I do now see it on that chart. No, I did not look at it before I bought the upgrade. I only read all of the advertisements and demos of the new features that did not mention this. I also notice on the chart that the base did not include the Remote Control of Applications using Web interface, which is another kick in the pants. I am now asking myself what I actually got with this upgrade, and I still have to question the logic of not including a new structure with it.

It seems to me that national instruments was kind enough to provide you with a new splash screen for the four or five hundred you probably had to shell out to get the upgrade.

I'm pretty displeased with the way ni presented that info, since the event structure was really the only reason to upgrade, oh wait that and the "handy" auto selector tool. Which all they should have done is actually explained that if you use tab and spacebar you can switch between the four and two (respectively) most popular tools for either the block diagram or the front panel. For that information is infinitely more useful than the tool, and infinitely less annoying (meaning it actually does what you want it to).
