What do people use to communicate with device?

My boss said there was OPC(OLE for process control), but I think there could be other things, too.

I want to compare them.

What options do I have?

Doesn't the answer depend on the device in question?

nyc is asking what device are you trying to communicate with.  Test equipment?  Printer?  Cell phone?  We have no clue what you are trying to accomplish.

There are thousands of different protocols over hundreds of different physical connections. A quick look at the different forums here should tell you that.

This really isn't a Labview question but more of a what protocol to use to communicate to a device, which is up to you.
