VISA not working with LabVIEW

I have a LeCroy scope successfully talking to LabVIEW through an NI GPIB-USB-HS device, but only when I use LabVIEW's GPIB functions.

I need to use LabVIEW's VISA functions for this project. But the VISA Resource Control cannot see any devices, even when I click "Refresh".

How do I make the VISA Resource Control see my scope?

BTW, My LabVIEW is version 8.20 and VISA is 4.1, both the latest.

Is the scope using the NI-VISA driver?  I believe that may be a requirement before you can actually see it in the device list/MAX.

I'm not sure what the scope is using, but the problem is with LabVIEW and/or VISA on my computer.

LabVIEW and VISA can't find anything; not the COM port, LPT1, or any other instument; the VISA Resource Control always pops up blank except for the word "Refresh".

The scope works well both through MAX and classic GPIB functions.

Also, the scope works fine on my notebook computer.

It sounds like more of a VISA problem than LabVIEW. The VISA Resource Name control is populated by reading the visconf.ini file I believe. With 4.1, it's now located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\National Instruments\NIvisa. You could try deleting it, going into MAX, and then selecting Refresh.

I tried that, but the problem still exists.

Hi - Alan from LeCroy Tech Support here.  LabVIEW 8 includes the right-click "I/O Name Filtering..." option for the VISA Resource Control. Selecting this option pulls up the "Filter VISA Names" window. See if the settings in this window are causing the problem.

Best Regards,
Alan

Those settings are still at their default values-- they will allow anything.

Hi bmihura,

You mentioned that you could not even see your built-in serial port (COM 1) listed as a VISA Resource.  I was wondering - do you see COM1, etc. listed in the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) under "Devices and Interfaces", or is it only missing from the VISA Resource control pull-down menu in LabVIEW?  If you can not even see this resource in MAX, it sounds like there may be something wrong with the installation of VISA - you may want to try repairing your driver.  This can be done with your installation CD or other distribution source handy & going to Window's Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.  A listing called "National Instruments Software" should be given & by selecting to change/modify this, you will get a pop-up window of all the National Instruments software installed on your computer.  From here you should see an NI-VISA listing & you can select to repair the driver.  Hope this helps!

Everything under MAX works perfectly.

Only the LabVIEW VISA interface is flaking on me.

Side note: Lately, the COM ports show up 50% of the time.
