Scaling of voltage input channels in MAX

I have run into issues with custom scaling and setting signal input ranges in MAX when acquiring analog inputs from C series cards in a Compact DAQ chassis. I would expect the signal input range to be applied to the input value before scaling, except I observe clipping if the input value is not the post scaled value. Am I doing something obviously wrong here?

Nope.  The range is based on the scaled values.  You can see in your picture that you have a range, and right next to it are the scaled units.  If you had a scale that multiplied the voltage by 10 and the units were lbs, then the dialog box would say your range is 0 to 100 lbs.
