Purchasing Labview 8.2.1

If I want to change from using Labview 8.0 to 8.2.1, do I buy an upgrade or is it the same as buying something completely new (i.e., does it matter whether my lab is already using Labview 8.0 or not)?

I downloaded Labview 8.2.1 from the NI website, and attempted to activate it with the serial number from my version 8.0 of Labview. That didn't work (obviously, in hindsight), so now I'm thinking I should pursuade my supervisor that we need to buy it, and want to know some more before talking to him about it.

Thanks in advance for any input. I know it seems like a basic question.

Regards,
Jonathan

You would need an upgrade, unless you want a second license. You can start at the main products page and click the link "Upgrade Advisor". It will tell you how much it will cost. I think it's $2K.
