Project advice and help

Hi all,
I am going to start on my project for my master program. I was wondering if anyone can help me?
i  need to know what I can use that is low cost.
I will be using labview 8.0. I need to communicate with a hardware of anytype.
what i have in mind is probably a camera, video or something. or even a tv screen/dvd player.
the idea i have is to read those videos into labview and do some type of compresssion or something.
i dont know where to start. dont know what pci to use. does anyone have an idea?
please help me..

I'm not sure what to advise as your description seems a little vague.

You say you would like to read signals into labVIEW. This sounds great, you can do loads of great stuff in labVIEW with Vision though I would ask do you have the vision toolkits for labVIEW 8.0 or Vision Assistant,  Vision Builder?

Hardware - you would like to communicate with hardware of any type?      TVs etc are passive so these yyou cannot easily communicate with image-wise. I think a camara is your best bet though again the method of receiving your signal is somewhat imaterial for this you could just use a saved vidio file. How exactly do you want to compress it?

the teacher basically let me choose my own project. i dont know what i want to do.
i dont want to spend so much money because its out of my own pocket.
i have labivew 8.0 from work and i have downloaded vision assistant trial edition.
i want to use AVR microcontrollers? i dont know what i want to do with it. but thats what my professor suggested.
what can i do with labview and AVR?
if i use labview vision with a TV for instant. can i stream tv quality into labview program?

why don't you try something more simple. A SCADA system perhaps.

AVR will get the data .. Labview will display

I'm not confident what I can recommend to you,  AVR microcontrollers are quite a wide area. LabVIEW as a language can be used again for a huge variety of applications.

I think as this is your masters project only you can decide on the Idea or concept you are going to research into. If at a later stage you have problems or need advice with the implementation of this then I would be most willing to assist.
