Overlapping Windows

I need to have overlapping time-data for an FFT based instrument. None
of the examples seem to cover
this. What is the best approach - do I read in more data than I need and
work on the buffer?

Not exactly sure what you are trying to do. If you want an FFT of a window sliding over time data the following webapage contains an example:
