SOLID Design principles still apply to LabVIEW, even if the creators of those principles have never even heard of LabVIEW. So, dont be afraid to pick up some books on solid design, even if they never mention LabVIEW. Beyond that, and what everyone else has suggested, the best advice is to just start programming with oop.

That is a good point.  For anybody getting started in OOP, I highly recommend this book: The Object-Oriented Thought Process
