Yes, I have experience this the hard way myself.  That's one of the first things I learned, always make enums typedefs from the git-go.  It saves on future (not far into the future) headaches.

On a side note, LabVIEW 2011 allows creating type definitions from diagram constants directly, making things even easier. 😄
