NI Labview Run-time Engine installation fail

I am attempting to install my USB-6008 data aquisition device for use with Labview.  I get an error:

The NI LabVIEW Run-Time Engine 7.1.1 installation has failed with the following error.

Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\OPC.ServerList.1\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. 

I've been having trouble with the installation in general - is the above error critical?  What can I do to correct it?

Are you logged in with Administrative rights?

Thank you for contacting National Instruments. After checking to see if you have administrative priviledges on the computer, you may want to look at these articles from Microsoft and Adobe. Try the steps highlighted there and let me know what you find.

This is my private machine and I have full priveleges.  The Microsoft KB doesn't apply to winXP and the Adobe references don't help as there is no registry path beginning with UNKNOWN (that I am aware of).  I am using the student version of Labview could this be a factor?

Thank you again for the prompt reply. You should be able to install the driver for for USB 6008 device with the student version of LabVIEW, so I do not think that it is an issue. I did some further research and I found that this is a Windows installer error and not a National Instruments error. Even though you are logged in as the administrator and have access to the key, the LabVIEW installer does not. You can fix this by changing the permission settings for the registry with the following steps.

Note: The registry contains critical system and application information. Editing the registry should be done very carefully and only after it is properly backed up.

1. Write down the path to the key referred to in the error.



2. Choose Start » Run, and type regedit in the text field to open the Windows Registry editor.



3. Before editing the registry, you should first backup your current registry file:


1. In the Registry Editor dialog box select File » Export.
2. Select All for the Export Range and save the file to a location of your choice.


4. Right-click on the parent of the key referred to in the error message and select Permissions from the shortcut menu. ( I would recommend you to do a search the "UNKNOWN" key).
   



5. (Note: Windows XP does not seem to save the registry setting in this step. In this case, the next step solves the problem.) In the Permissions dialog box, click on the Advanced button and select both Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here. and Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects, and click OK and Yes to continue.



6. Close the permissions box for the parent key and open up the permissions box for the key specific to the error by right-clicking on the key and selecting Permissions.
Verify that the group SYSTEM is populated in the group or user name list. Also click on this group and verify that it has full permissions. If the group exists with full persmissions, you should now be able to install LabVIEW.


7. If the group exists but does not have full permissions, click on the Advanced button. Then select SYSTEM and click Edit. Then check the box to allow full control and click OK. You should now be able to install LabVIEW.



8. If the group SYSTEM does not exist, you can manually add the group. Click on the Advanced button and then click on the Add button. Type SYSTEM in the object name field and click OK. Then check the checkbox to allow full control and click OK. You should now be able to install LabVIEW.
