That sounds like you are referring to USB.  Usually a serial communication is RS-232 or TTL UART.  If using USB, there are all kinds of things that could go wrong from Windows power settings to hub issues.

Could you help me understand the problems of Windows power settings and  hub issues with USB and any possible ways of troubleshooting ?

What other communications does your hardware support?  Does your microcontroller have an ethernet port?  You could use TCP.  Does it have a CAN port?  You could use CAN hardware.  Generally serial is used because it is the first place people go (after UART) to talk to another device.  If you are having communication issues I'd check the things you probably already have checked like wiring, termination, baud rates, retry checks.  Maybe probe the lines with a scope to see how they look.
