LabVIEW Evaluation for Mac 11

Hello,

I would like to know if LabVIEW Evaluation version is available for MacOS 11 and if not, when shall we expect the announcement?

LabVIEW for Mac 2020 can be made to run on the latest MacOS 11 (BigSur), but you need to do some command line magic to force the OS into compliance. LabVIEW 2021 due out later this year will work on MacOS 11.

But you also ask about support for M1 hardware. Here the answer is more complicated.

LabVIEW itself can be made to work on M1 hardware with the Rosetta 2 translation layer. There is no native LabVIEW for Mac M1 version available and the current 2021 Beta does not support that either.

The main problem is that Rosetta 2 can translate user space applications like LabVIEW but it can not translate kext's (kernel extensions) which are the main part of hardware device drivers. The reason is likely that translating in kernel space is very hard, and even more dangerous if anything goes wrong as it can take down your entire OS and not just crash your app and therefore Apple decided to simply not even try to do it.

This means no DAQ, GPIB, or any other hardware that relies on kernel drivers in any way other than what comes with the OS already. For LabVIEW this means that you are unable to access any hardware unless it is directly accessed over TCP/IP, or standard serial ports.
